Recently the news has been flowing around the world that UK has some of the best British philanthropists who are making huge donations for good causes. Such donations are not going unnoticed and have been picked up by local and international media. It was reported that last year there were around 165 British who donated more than £1 million. Moreover, there were 20 British donors that collectively donated around $34 million, which is quite impressive.
More research was done about such British philanthropists and it was found that David Sainsbury comfortably topped the list. He has more than $280 million to his name in donations and charities in the year of 2013. This amount does hold significance but what is more significant is the percentage of wealth that he donated. Sainsbury also topped the list of donations made compared to the overall wealth. There are more people like David Sainsbury and these people are the reason why donations and charities are increasing in UK. A 15% increase in significant donations was observed in 2013 when compared with 2012.
Times Giving List is a great tool according to Beth Breeze who is the director of Centre for Philanthropy at Kent. She said that Time Giving List highlights those important individuals who love to donate. This list does not only appreciate such people but also encourages people and motivates them to give more. A competition is created among such wealthy individuals when the numbers are published for the public to see.
On the other hand, many fundraisers have raised questions over this list and they have specifically fingers pointed at the listed individuals. The Times Giving List is accurate enough and does publish reliable numbers. The people who view such lists wonder where the money that they donate actually goes. More than often it is the case that this money goes to the foundations that such people work with.
Many wealthy people have their own popular charities and nonprofit organizations and most of the money is invested in such causes. Unfortunately, such donations are not observed being made towards the smaller charities. Smaller charities do deserve recognition too and such charities will be happy enough to make progress even with £1 million. This kind of progress can be seen happening in UK as more and more people are willing to come forward to donate generously towards causes that are worth taking forward.
