Heroes 4 Suki-A Miracle Breast Cancer Treatment
My Story
I am Suki, an 11-year-old Snowshoe Siamese cat and I have an aggressive form of Breast Cancer. Many people do not know that cats and dogs can get breast cancer, and like with people early detection is imperative.
About a month ago, my mommy noticed that one of my eight nipples got super big, but my regular vet had COVID and I couldn’t see her for 2 weeks. When we finally did see her, our nipple area formed a lump under the skin and it got infected. So our vet recommended antibiotics and for us to schedule a radical mastectomy as soon as possible.
Our surgeon, Dr. Kameron, from Animal Surgical Center, did an amazing job and he removed all 4 of my mammary glands. The tumor was sent out for a biopsy.
Today, Mommy and I are devastated. I am scared and Mommy is sad, as we learned that I am positive for a particularly aggressive form of breast cancer. We went back to see Dr. Impellizeri, a Veterinary Oncologist who specializes in aggressive Cancer treatments on January 4th.
Dr. Impellizeri determined that this cancer has metastasized and had spread to my lymph nodes. We have all heard of breast cancer in women. With approximately one woman in eight or nine falling victim to this form of cancer.
There are awareness campaigns from numerous healthcare agencies and research is ongoing. Every woman is encouraged to check for breast lumps regularly. But it turns out that cats (and dogs) can also get breast cancer (mostly female but male as well) and like women, depending on how aggressive the cancer is and what stage it is, determines the prognosis. I have Stage 2 metastatic Adenocarcinoma that has spread to the lymph. This is very similar to Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer in women.
The Impact
The Oncologist says that I only have two to six months left to live unless I get treatment with chemotherapy and a new treatment that can also help people with breast cancer have the best outcomes.
The relapse and metastasis of breast cancer remain a great challenge despite advances in chemotherapy, endocrine therapy, and HER2-targeted therapy in the past decades. Innovative therapeutic strategies are being researched and like people with similar cancers, my best shot for survival is a clinical trial. I was lucky enough to make it into Dr. Impellizeri’s clinical trial. A cancer vaccine is often an attractive option as it aims to induce a durable immunologic response to eradicate tumor cells.
